At least 35,000 applicants could be affected, cautions the American embassy

A substantial information leak in Somalia's digital visa application system may have exposed private data pertaining to tens of thousands of individuals, involving US citizens, the United States diplomatic mission in Somalia has cautioned.

Officials stated obtained trustworthy accounts that "anonymous digital intruders" compromised the Federal Government of Somalia's digital visa application portal, likely endangering data from approximately 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files circulating online comprise full names, images, birth dates, marital status, residential locations and email contacts, according to a United States official announcement published on recently.

"This information compromise remains active and potentially disclose all private information provided to the system," the UK has similarly alerted travellers.

"Evaluate the dangers when considering application for a digital visa necessary for travel to the Federal Republic."

Administrative Action

Federal administration representatives have remained silent on the breach. However the government has moved its visa service away from the original e-visa website toward the updated platform, without providing an official explanation.

"Although Embassy Mogadishu lacks the capacity to validate whether applicant details is part of the breach, travelers who have requested visas through the electronic visa system might be compromised," the US' statement stated.

Regional Implications

Somalia's new system requires each person traveling, including those from the self-declared republic of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to apply for travel visas via electronic platforms.

Commentators state visitors have encountered supplementary costs in certain regions, totaling duplicate payments.

Regional Dynamics

Somaliland, that proclaimed statehood in the early nineties, administers its affairs through independent structures but has not been worldwide acceptance. Mogadishu authorities insists that the region still constitutes its sovereign territory.

The reported compromise contributes to long-running tensions concerning central government and Hargeisa regarding authority over Somali airspace. While Mogadishu restored total jurisdiction of territorial skies in the past decade, Hargeisa administration continues to contest the current system.

Current Developments

The conflict escalated further recently as Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro stated Somaliland would not accept Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that aviation companies are required to secure authorization from Somaliland officials before entering the region's aviation space.

Nevertheless prominent aviation companies have declined to accept travelers without federal visa authorization.

In the latest development, Somaliland's Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Aadan again insisted that "all visitors to the northern territory should receive travel authorization upon landing", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process lacked security and cautioning that "individual details could be accessed by extremist organizations" as a result of employing the platform.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has left some travellers traveling to the northern region unable to board flights after being denied boarding because they didn't have the federal electronic visa.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has stated to journalistic entities that the regulations - initially declared in recent months - became operational on 10 November.

Officials declared companies that ignore would be instructed to divert, and stated numerous flights had already been rerouted.

Jurisdictional Battle

Footage released by the northern region's air transport department reportedly displays local air-traffic controllers issuing instructions to international pilots - an action hailed internally as a confirmation of Somaliland's autonomy.

But Mogadishu's air transport department asserts it maintains sole administrative and legal control concerning the federal aviation control area (Flight Information Region), encompassing the entire country's aviation space. Officials have directed each flight to ignore any instructions coming from entities except central government.

Authorities alerted that not adhering to national and worldwide air transport standards could generate aviation dangers and result in "serious legal consequences".
