The former Brazilian president detained after being deemed a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
